Polemia is the data controller for everything below. You can reach us using the box below, or the same one in Settings. Either comes straight to us.

No account needed

You do not give us an email address, a phone number, a password or a real name. On your first visit we create a random ID and store it in a cookie on your device. That ID is what makes your answers, quizzes and stickers yours.

Optional: linking a Google account. If you want your profile and quizzes on more than one device, you can link a Google account in Settings and then log in with it anywhere. We ask Google only to confirm it is you, not for your email, name or photo, and Google gives us a code that stands for you. We do not keep even that code as it is: we store a scrambled version of it, which can find your profile again and cannot be turned back into anything about you. You can unlink it at any time, and deleting your profile deletes it.

What we store

  • A random player ID. Not derived from anything about you.
  • A nickname and an emoji, chosen by you, or generated. Public.
  • Your answers to the daily question and to any games you play, with the date.
  • Quizzes you make and games you host: the title and the questions. Not the documents, files or pages you made them from (see “Who we use”).
  • Your stickers and wall, and a running score and streak, which are recorded but no longer shown anywhere.
  • Who you follow, and gifts, emotes and notes you send or receive.
  • Messages you send us from the box on this page or in Settings.
  • A country code, worked out from your IP address at the moment you vote. The IP itself is not stored.
  • A scrambled form of your network address (a salted hash, never the address itself), only where we limit abuse, such as how many games one network can make in a day. It is removed from those records after 30 days.
  • A language preference, so questions arrive in the right language.
  • If you link Google: the scrambled code described above, and when you linked it.

Polemia shows a wall of sponsor tiles. It is the same wall for everybody: nothing about you is used to choose what you see, and we count views and clicks without recording who made them. We do not track you across other websites, we do not sell your data, and we do not share it with anyone for their own purposes (that includes “selling” and “sharing” as California law defines them).

Why we are allowed to

For the game itself, meaning your answers and stickers, the lawful basis is performance of a contract(Article 6(1)(b)): you asked to play, and this is what playing consists of. For the anonymous, aggregated statistics we publish (“62% of the world said yes”) the basis is legitimate interests(Article 6(1)(f)). The whole point of the game is the crowd’s answer, and no individual is identifiable in it. Quizzes you make, and a Google link if you choose one, are also performance of a contract: you asked for them. The scrambled network addresses kept against abuse rest on legitimate interests: keeping the game working and fair for everybody.

What other people can see

Your nickname, emoji, wall and stickers are public. Your individual answer to a day’s question is not shown next to your name; it is counted into the totals. Notes you attach to a gift are visible to the person you sent it to. In a game, the other people in that game see your nickname and score. A quiz made from a topic or a public web page can be listed in the public Quiz Library, without your name; a quiz made from your own file, pasted text or a private link never is.

Who we use

  • DigitalOcean, hosting and database (EU/US).
  • Anthropic, writes the questions. For the daily question the prompt holds themes and past question text only. When you make a quiz from a topic, a link, a file or pasted text, that topic or material is sent to Anthropic to write the questions; Polemia keeps the questions, not the material, and under its commercial terms Anthropic does not use it to train its models. Please do not make quizzes from documents that contain other people’s personal information.
  • Google, only if you choose to link a Google account: it confirms it is you when you link or log in. We never receive your email.

Where data leaves the UK/EEA it is covered by the UK/EU Standard Contractual Clauses under those providers’ terms.

How long we keep it

Your profile stays until you delete it. Answers to past days are kept as part of the public archive but are detached from you when you delete your account; the count stays, the link to you does not. Feed items (gifts, emotes, alerts) are shallow by design and are not archived. Your quizzes stay until you delete them or your profile. The Google code stays until you unlink it or delete your profile. Scrambled network addresses are removed from our abuse records after 30 days, and an expired block is deleted after 90.

Children

Polemia is a general-audience game. Children can play in a game that a teacher or parent runs (that is what “For children” quizzes are for), and joining a game needs no name, email or account, only a nickname. We suggest a first name or a made-up one. Children under 13, or under the age of digital consent where they live (up to 16 in parts of Europe), should not link a Google account or send us messages without a parent’s permission. Nothing on Polemia is targeted at anyone, and no child’s answers are shown outside the game they are playing. If you believe a child has given us information they should not have, send us a message and we will delete it.

Automated decisions and AI

The daily questions, and the questions in quizzes made from a topic or from material, are written by an AI model. No AI makes any decision about you, profiles you, or produces any legal or similarly significant effect, so the EU AI Act’s high-risk rules do not apply. We tell you here that the content is AI-generated, which is the transparency obligation that does apply. Your answers are never used to train anybody’s model.

Cookies

One cookie for players. It holds the random ID that keeps your profile yours. Two others exist only for the moment they are needed.

pol_pid
Strictly necessary · lasts 3 years · httpOnly, so no script can read it · holds a random ID and nothing else.
pol_goog
Only while you link or log in with Google · lasts 10 minutes, deleted as soon as Google sends you back · a one-time security check that the reply is really for you.
pol_adv
Only for businesses using the advertising page · holds a random advertiser ID, the same way pol_pid does for players.

Because they are strictly necessary to provide a service you asked for, they do not require consent under the ePrivacy rules (in Germany, section 25 of the TDDDG), but you are entitled to know they are there, which is what this section is for. We set no analytics, advertising or tracking cookies, and there are no third-party cookies on Polemia.

We also use your browser’s local storage for small things, such as that you have seen the welcome card or yesterday’s result, which notices you closed, and how many quizzes you have made on this device (so the reminder about linking Google appears only now and then). That never leaves your device.

Your data, and your rights

Under the UK GDPR and EU GDPR you have the right to access your data, correct it, delete it, take it elsewhere, restrict how we use it, and object to it. You can also complain to a regulator: in the UK the ICO, in the EU your national authority (in Ireland, the Data Protection Commission).

Wherever you live, the same rights. We give everybody these rights, whatever their country, including under California’s privacy law (CCPA/CPRA), Brazil’s LGPD, Canada’s PIPEDA and Australia’s Privacy Act. We do not sell or share personal information, so there is nothing to opt out of, and you will never be treated differently for using any of these rights.

Two of those you can exercise yourself, right here, without asking us and without waiting. For anything else, send us a message from Settings and we will respond within one month.

⬇ Download my data

The download is a JSON file of everything above. Deleting removes your profile, answers, stickers, wall and follows immediately and for good. There is no email address to restore it to, so it cannot be undone.

Terms of use

Polemia is free. There is no subscription.

Behave reasonably

  • Do not choose a nickname that is abusive, impersonates somebody, or pretends to be us.
  • Do not use notes or answers to harass anybody or to post anything unlawful.
  • Do not automate play, script votes, or try to distort the results.

We may remove a nickname, a note or an account that breaks these, and we will tell you why if you ask.

Stickers

Stickers and walls are features of a game. They have no monetary value, cannot be bought or sold, and are not property. We may change, replace or retire them.

What we promise, and what we do not

Polemia is provided as-is. We do not guarantee it will always be available, that the questions will suit you, or that your data will survive a catastrophe, although we take reasonable care. Nothing here excludes liability for death, personal injury or fraud, and nothing here affects your statutory rights as a consumer.

Content

The daily questions are generated by an AI model and reviewed by us. If one is wrong, unfair or upsetting, tell us and we will remove it. Nothing on Polemia is advice of any kind.

Quizzes you make

  • Questions made from a topic or from your material are written by AI and are not checked by us before you play them. Read them first, especially for a class.
  • Only make quizzes from material you have the right to use, and not from documents containing other people’s personal information or anything confidential.
  • You are responsible for the quizzes you make and run. We may remove one that breaks these terms.

Sponsors

Sponsor tiles link to other websites, which have their own terms and privacy notices. A tile is not a recommendation by us.

Law

These terms are governed by the law of Ireland, and the courts of Ireland have jurisdiction, without affecting any right you have to bring a claim in the country where you live.

Who runs Polemia

Polemia is an early-stage startup based in Dublin, Ireland. Full company details will be published soon.
